Pet train travel in India: the rules, options and how to book

Indian Railways does let you travel with your dog or cat — but only under specific rules, in specific classes, booked in a specific way. Here is exactly how it works, in plain language.

The basics

Can my pet travel by train?

Yes — for dogs and cats only. Exotic or wild animals are not carried under the pet category. The catch is that pets are allowed in only a few places on the train, and you cannot simply add them to any ticket.

Where pets can travel
  • First AC (1A) — a private coupe or cabin booked entirely to you
  • Any class — a small pet in a basket (puppies, kittens, small cats)
  • The brake / luggage van — booked as registered luggage
Where pets cannot travel
  • Sleeper class
  • 2AC and 3AC
  • AC Chair Car
  • Second Class and General

Trying to carry a pet in these coaches risks a penalty and your pet being moved to the brake van.

Your three options

The three ways a pet can travel by train

Indian Railways sanctions exactly three arrangements. The right one depends on your pet’s size and whether you are travelling with them.

Most comfortable

1st AC private coupe or cabin

Best for: most dogs and cats, when their owner travels with them

You book the whole 2-berth coupe (or 4-berth cabin) under one PNR, and your pet rides with you the entire way. Allotment of the full coupe is a separate request to the railway, granted at their discretion.

Limited to trains that have a 1A coach, and the coupe is not guaranteed — book early.

Small pets

Basket in any class

Best for: puppies, kittens and small cats

A small pet that fits in a basket can travel with you in any class, on the usual booking charges. A genuine Railways allowance most people never hear about.

Only for genuinely small pets — and they must stay in the basket and not disturb other passengers.

Larger dogs

Brake-van dog box

Best for: larger dogs when a private coupe is not available

Your dog is booked as registered luggage and travels in a ventilated dog box in the brake / luggage van. You ride in your own coach and attend to them at stops.

The pet travels alone and brake vans can get hot in summer — not for nervous, snub-nosed or senior pets.

Quick decision

Which option fits your pet?

A simple way to narrow it down before you book.

A basket in your own coach is usually simplest and calmest.

The brake-van dog box is the fallback — best paired with a handler who rides the same train.

Snub-nosed breeds, very senior or anxious pets, and peak-summer brake-van travel are the cases where road or air is often kinder — see below.

Step by step

How booking actually works

The part that trips people up: your pet cannot be booked with your passenger ticket in advance. It opens only once the chart is prepared.

1
Book your own passenger ticket

For the private-coupe option this is a 1st AC (1A) ticket. Book it the usual way, online or at a counter.

2
Request the full coupe or cabin

Submit a written request to the railway — the Divisional Railway Manager office, or the station reservation office — to allot the whole coupe or cabin for your pet. It is granted at their discretion, so do it as early as you can.

3
Wait for the first chart

Pet booking opens only after the first reservation chart is prepared — a few hours before departure — and stays open until the final chart. You cannot do this step earlier.

4
Book the pet: online or at the parcel office

Once it opens, book online via IRCTC → Trains → Dogs/Cats Booking (it opens the Railway parcel site; pay by UPI or SBI), or in person at the station parcel / luggage office.

5
Arrive early and keep the luggage ticket

Reach the station early — at least three hours for a brake-van booking. The luggage ticket is your pet’s ticket: keep it safe and surrender it at the destination.

This is the honest pain point. Because pet booking only opens after chart preparation, families often find themselves sorting it out at the station on the day. It is exactly the step FidoJet manages for you.

Before you go

Documents and what to bring

Missing paperwork is the most common reason for being turned away at the parcel office. Have all of this ready.

Required papers
  • Fit-to-travel certificate from a vet, dated 24 to 48 hours before travel
  • Up-to-date vaccination records, including rabies
  • A vet certificate noting the pet’s breed, colour and sex
  • Your own photo identity document
Travel kit
  • Collar and leash — mandatory throughout
  • A well-fitted muzzle for large breeds, as railway rules require
  • Water, light food and a familiar blanket or toy
  • Poop bags, wipes and any regular medication
What it costs

The charges, honestly

How it is chargedAs luggage, not a passenger fare
Rough range~ ₹300 to ₹2,000, depending on distance
RefundNo refund of pet freight if you cancel

Railway charges change and vary by route and weight. Treat these as a guide and confirm the exact amount on the official IRCTC Dogs/Cats booking terms or at your parcel office.

An honest call

When the train is right — and when it isn’t

Train can be a calm, affordable way to travel with a pet — and a private 1st AC coupe is climate-controlled, so it works even for sensitive pets. The part to think carefully about is the brake-van dog box.

Train suits
  • Calm, healthy pets travelling with their owner
  • A private 1st AC coupe — climate-controlled and with you the whole way, fine even for snub-nosed or senior pets
  • Owners who would rather stay beside their pet than hand them to cargo
  • Routes a private coupe actually runs on
Think twice about the dog box for
  • Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds, which struggle to breathe in heat
  • Very senior, unwell or highly anxious pets — the dog box travels alone
  • Peak-summer travel in the brake van
  • Very long, multi-day journeys

For these, if a private coupe is not available, a dedicated air-conditioned road move or a pet-approved flight is usually kinder than the brake van.

Pet train travel — your questions

Can dogs and cats really travel on Indian trains?
Yes. Indian Railways permits dogs and cats to travel, in a 1st AC private coupe, in a basket in any class for small pets, or in the brake van as luggage. Exotic and wild animals are not carried.
Which classes allow pets?
Only First AC, and only when you book the entire coupe or cabin. Small pets may travel in a basket in any class. Pets are not allowed in Sleeper, 2AC, 3AC, AC Chair Car, Second Class or General.
Can I book my pet online and in advance?
Pet booking opens only after the first chart is prepared, a few hours before departure. You can then book online through the IRCTC Dogs/Cats Booking option, or in person at the station parcel office.
Do I really have to book the whole coupe?
For your pet to travel with you in 1st AC, yes. Because no co-passenger objection is allowed, the full coupe or cabin must be booked under your PNR.
What documents do I need?
A vet fit-to-travel certificate from the last 24 to 48 hours, vaccination records including rabies, a vet certificate noting breed, colour and sex, and your own photo identity.
How much does it cost?
Pets are charged as luggage, usually between about 300 and 2,000 rupees depending on distance. Charges change, so confirm at the parcel office or on the IRCTC booking flow.
Is the brake van safe for my dog?
It is sanctioned and used regularly, but the pet travels alone and brake vans can get hot in peak summer. For nervous, snub-nosed or senior dogs we usually advise road or air instead.
