Trains get chosen because they are the affordable option. In the wrong hands, that affordability comes at a hidden cost: pets promised a comfortable berth, then moved like undocumented goods to cut corners and save money. First-time pet parents do not know what to ask — some are caught by urgency, some by a price that looks too good to be true. At its worst, this has meant pets travelling in genuinely dangerous conditions. And it is far more common than anyone in the industry admits.
What actually goes wrong
None of this is hypothetical. These are the shortcuts some operators take to move a pet cheaply — and exactly why each one puts an animal at risk.
The 1st AC that never was
You are promised a private, air-conditioned berth. But the ticket was never confirmed — so on the day, your pet is squeezed in wherever there is room. The comfort you paid for does not exist.
The generator car
To avoid booking properly, pets are hidden in the power car, right beside the diesel generator — extreme heat, fumes and constant noise. This is where pets have died.
Handed to a stranger
Instead of a handler, the pet is passed to a train attendant for a cash bribe, then tucked out of sight in a luggage rack. No one on that train is accountable for your pet.
Travelling as “goods”
Moved off the books, undocumented, around the rules rather than through them. If anything goes wrong, there is no record and no recourse.
No care on the journey
No feeding, no water, no toilet or stretch breaks — for hours, sometimes days. A living animal treated as cargo.
Silence

Some operators will happily promise a handler, fresh food and regular updates before you book — then quietly break every claim once your pet is on the train. The answers alone are not enough; check the operator’s profile and track record too.
Be especially wary of a general transport or logistics company rather than a specialist pet relocator. They often pass your pet to a cheaper vendor, who may hand it on again to a freelance attendant — and with every hand-off, no one is left answerable for your pet.

Train pet travel, answered honestly
Is it legal to send a pet by train in India?
Yes — when it is booked properly through one of the sanctioned Indian Railways arrangements: a private 1st AC coupe, a basket in your coach, or the luggage-van dog box. What is illegal is moving a pet undocumented, off the books, or hidden in the power car for a bribe.
Is train travel safe for my pet?
It can be, done correctly — a confirmed berth, a handler travelling with your pet, and proper food, water and updates. The danger you may have read about comes from the shortcuts, not from the train itself.
Can my pet really travel in 1st AC?
Yes, if the whole coupe or cabin is allotted to you and the booking is confirmed. We never promise 1st AC unless the tickets are actually available — a promise without a confirmed ticket is exactly the practice to avoid.
What is the generator coach, and why is it dangerous?
It is the power car that houses the diesel generator powering the train — extreme heat, exhaust fumes and constant noise. No pet should ever travel there. Some operators use it to avoid booking a proper, ventilated arrangement, and it has cost pets their lives. It is completely different from the sanctioned, ventilated luggage van.
Will someone travel with my pet?
